PET Plastic Packaging's Demand for Color Masterbatch
Data:2026-06-24 17:04:29 | Visits:

PET is widely used across the packaging industry due to its excellent transparency, lightweight properties, and recyclability. Packaging is the largest downstream application sector for PET resin, with beverage bottles, edible oil containers, cosmetic packaging, and more all made from this material. As the key ingredient that gives PET its color, color masterbatch directly impacts the appearance, production efficiency, and cost of PET packaging. Different types of masterbatch also show significant performance differences.

1. Core Requirements for Color Masterbatch in PET Packaging

Whether used in beverage bottles, water bottles, edible oil containers, or cosmetic packaging, the fundamental requirements for color masterbatch in PET applications are highly consistent and can be summarized in five areas:

First, color accuracy and dispersion uniformity. PET products are mostly transparent or translucent, with very low tolerance for color variation. The color masterbatch must be uniformly distributed throughout the matrix to avoid visible defects such as color spots and flow lines.

Second, high coloring efficiency and low addition rates. The addition level directly affects the product's transparency and the physical properties of the base material. An ideal masterbatch should achieve the target color depth at the minimum dosage, without compromising PET's tensile strength or impact resistance.

Third, food contact safety compliance. For packaging intended for food and beverages, the color masterbatch must meet strict regulatory standards.

2. Liquid Color Masterbatch: A Coloring Solution Tailored for PET

Liquid color masterbatch consists of pigments or dyes dispersed in a fluid polymer carrier. Compared to traditional solid color masterbatch pellets, liquid color masterbatch offers systematic advantages specifically for PET packaging applications.

Dispersion Quality
The liquid carrier ensures that pigments are already pre-dispersed before entering the screw, allowing them to immediately wet and encapsulate PET granules upon contact, preventing localized agglomeration. This delivers a uniform coloring effect—a characteristic particularly critical for high-transparency PET products.

Addition Rates
For transparent PET products, the recommended addition rate for liquid color masterbatch is only 0.03%–0.2%. This lower usage means significantly reduced raw material procurement costs, less interference with PET's physical properties, and decreased warehousing and transportation expenses.

Clean Production
Liquid color masterbatch eliminates dust generation during production. Traditional solid masterbatches release dust during handling and weighing, which affects workshop cleanliness and poses cross-contamination risks. Liquid color masterbatch is delivered through fully enclosed piping, resulting in a dust-free, leak-free production environment.

No Pre-Drying Required
Although liquid color masterbatch is supplied in liquid form, it contains no moisture and can be added directly to the process without requiring additional drying.

3. Color Masterbatch and the PET Packaging Lightweighting Trend

Lightweighting is an important strategy for reducing costs and minimizing carbon footprint in PET packaging. Taking beverage bottles as an example, over the past decade, the weight of a typical 500ml water bottle has decreased from over 20 grams to approximately 15 grams, with some advanced production lines even approaching 12 grams.

As preform wall thickness is reduced, the processing window for stretch blow molding narrows considerably, placing higher demands on PET's intrinsic viscosity and melt strength. Any foreign additives can have a magnified impact on PET's properties. Liquid color masterbatch, with its low addition rate of 0.03%–0.2%, offers better compatibility in lightweight preform production.
