PET is the dominant packaging material for fruit juices, tea drinks and other beverages. However, PET has a high oxygen permeation rate. During sealed storage, transportation and retail shelf display, beverages keep interacting with oxygen, which leads to oxidation, discoloration and off-flavor development.
Standard PET cannot fully block oxygen molecules from penetrating the bottle wall. External oxygen continuously permeates through PET. In addition, some oxygen remains in the bottle headspace after beverage filling.
Conventional solutions such as multi-layer coextrusion or surface coating only provide passive barrier protection. These approaches cannot remove oxygen already trapped inside the sealed package.
This is why Oxygen Absorbers integrated directly into PET bottle walls are required. Built on dual-barrier principles, the system actively removes oxygen to maintain low oxygen levels inside packaging and slow beverage oxidation.
How the Dual-Barrier Oxygen Absorber Works
York ActivOS Oxygen Absorber is a high-concentration functional masterbatch. It can be directly blended with PET resin and incorporated into bottle substrates via preform and blow molding processes. No extra coating is needed, and a single-layer PET bottle can achieve dual protection through two core mechanisms: internal active oxygen scavenging and external synergistic barrier.
1. Internal Active Oxygen Scavenging: Remove Residual Oxygen Inside Packaging After filling, oxygen trapped in the headspace and dissolved inside the beverage is a major trigger for oxidation. Active oxygen scavenging molecules dispersed within the bottle wall capture free oxygen on contact. They continuously reduce residual oxygen levels and maintain a low-oxygen environment inside the package, cutting the supply of reactants for oxidation at the source.
2. External Synergistic Barrier: Block Oxygen Infiltration from Outside A plain PET bottle wall acts as a pathway for oxygen molecules, allowing continuous oxygen diffusion from outside to inside. After stretch blow molding, the dispersed Oxygen Absorber masterbatch lengthens the diffusion path of oxygen molecules and creates a synergistic physical barrier. When external oxygen attempts to penetrate the bottle wall, it reacts with active scavenging materials embedded in the wall during permeation, greatly slowing oxygen ingress.
To summarize the dual-barrier concept: actively consume residual oxygen inside the bottle and intercept oxygen permeating from outside. It controls oxygen from both directions, rather than merely blocking oxygen passively.
